WESTFIELD — The City Council accepted a grant of $307,500 on Aug. 17 from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust to the Department of Public Works Water Division for the Lead Service Line Inventories and Replacement Plan project.

Acting DPW Director Francis Cain said the grant will allow the city to take inventory of its in-ground pipes to determine if there is any lead in the drinking water service lines. Cain said the department does not believe there is any, but they have to be able to say with certainty that there is none.

He said the process involves going through historical records, photographic evidence from when the city changed its water meters, and historical data.
