GILL, Mass. (WWLP) – According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), a portion of Route 2 eastbound in Gill, just west of Avenue A Bridge is closed until further notice.

Heavy rain and flash floods have caused a section of Route 2 in Gill to erode. Eastbound traffic will be detoured around this area by utilizing I-91 northbound to Route 10 Northbound (Exit 50A) to Route 63 South, where it will rejoin Route 2 eastbound in Erving, according to MassDOT.

The Warwick police posted the following photos on their Facebook page and said that Route 2 Eastbound is closed at Factory Hollow which is just west of Adams Road and east from the Gill Montague Bridge.

22News spoke with Assistant Chief Ben Clark of the Deerfield Fire Department about road repairs there and in surrounding communities like Gill, Greenfield and Conway. He says crews are working adamantly to bring back full operation of the impacted roadways.

“The state has been really good about getting people so they can get access between locations. The hope that with all this, we’ll get infrastructure funding from the state and federal government because all these small town, it’s just going to keep happening,” said Clark.

When driving through the detoured area of Route 2 and any other areas getting repaired, drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed and give themselves more time to get to their destination.

Senator Jo Comerford posted to her Facebook that this is a public safety measure, and her team is working closely with MassDOT and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).
